1. Commenting on Labour’s proposal to reduce child deaths on the road, David Pitt, Head of Insurance at MORE TH>N, said:
“We are pleased that these issues are a high priority for the Labour party. Our research1 shows that every year on the School Run alone, 7,000 deaths and injuries will be caused, resulting in over 200 child deaths. We also found a 10 per cent reduction in school commuting by car could prevent 190 deaths and injuries a year – that’s one for every school day. Therefore, we welcome steps to reduce the number of accidents to children in the UK each year and would be happy to work with any political party to try and make a difference to road safety awareness.”
2. Commenting on Labour’s proposal to reduce uninsured driving in the UK, David Pitt, Head of Insurance at MORE TH>N, said:
“Uninsured driving is one issue we know many motorists would like to see dealt with once and for all. We know that over a million drivers in the UK are currently uninsured2 – so it’s a huge issue. Our research3 shows that seventy five per cent of motorists favour much harsher penalties for offenders; a third would welcome a total driving ban for culprits, with confiscation and destruction of the vehicle deemed as an equal punishment. As many as sixteen per cent favour imprisonment for those caught driving without insurance.
“However, in order to tackle uninsured drivers successfully, we believe that the most impactful solution would be to link the DVLA and Motor Insurance Database to improve the authorities’ ability to identify uninsured drivers in order to catch and sentence them. We hope that following the Election the Road Safety Bill will be revisited when parliament reconvenes.”
