The search for the UK’s best small business names kicks off on Monday 9th July, as small business insurer MORE TH>N BUSINESS launches a nationwide campaign to uncover, showcase and reward businesses that boast creative, clever and humorous names.
UK firms and customers are urged to nominate businesses with inventive names by visiting www.whatsinaname.uk.com by Sunday 15th July. Participants have the chance to win a 30 gigabyte (GB) video iPod and small business owners can also nominate their own business. The judges’ favourite will win a year’s free insurance with MORE TH>N BUSINESS1, and the chance to see their company’s name rocket to stardom.
Entrepreneurial spirit is thriving throughout Britain. But with over 400,0002 new UK start-ups each year, it is becoming increasingly difficult for business owners to settle on a catchy yet original trading name.
Mike Bowman, head of insurance at MORE TH>N BUSINESS, explained: “Small businesses and independent high street retailers may not have massive marketing budgets but this doesn’t mean there is a lack of creative flair. We know there are brilliant business names out there and we’re appealing to the public to help us find and celebrate them”.
Bowman continued: “The name of a business can often dictate success or failure, but that doesn’t mean great names are the preserve of rich businesses. History is littered with examples of big companies embarking on expensive renaming projects, only to scrap their new names soon after because they simply failed to capture the imagination of the market.
“On the flip side, there are thousands of independent business owners out there with limited budgets, but who have the flair and imagination to capture the public’s attention.”
Some example small business names in the UK that have already caught the eye of the MORE TH>N BUSINESS team are:
1) Pizza The Action (Pizza restaurant in Rugby)
2) Paws for Thought (pet shop in West Midlands)
3) Blooming Dales (florist in Ipswich)
4) The Codfather (fish and chip shop in London)
5) Sejuice (juice bar in Brighton).
